Connor McDavid Scores Overtime Winner Against Latvia
Team Canada Captain, Connor McDavid, bats in the overtime winner in their round robin game against the pesky Latvia team in the 2018 IIHF World Hockey Championship.
With under 5 minutes left in overtime in their second last round robin game against a very stout Latvia, Team Canada needed it’s captain, and best player to step up and put the game on his stick. The game was tied at one-a-piece, which means it was a closely contested match with very little room for error. Then late in the extra frame Connor McDavid drives the net and has his initial shot stopped by keeper Kristers Gudlevskis but then has the wherewithal to quickly re-adjust his body and bat in the rebound out of mid-air in order to seal the game for Team Canada.
Though Team Canada won the game and was able to punch their ticket to the tournament’s knockout stages, Connor McDavid’s body language didn’t display very much happy and positive emotion. He is clearly bothered by the fact that Team Canada struggled to get going against this Latvian team. With one more round robin game against Germany remaining, Team Canada has 3-1-1-1 record, which has landed them 4th spot in their group of 8.
With loses to USA and Finland, Canada has not quite seen the success they’ve hoped for so far in this tournament. It’ll be interesting to see how they respond against a good Germany team in their final round robin game. They will look to exact some sort of revenge against the Germans, the same team that ended Team Canada’s run in this past Winter Olympics.
