The Mariners go back to the future with there Turn Ahead the Clock game on Saturday.

In 1998, the Seattle Mariners turned ahead the clock to 2027 in a game that featured some of their best players. In the 90’s, wearing sleeveless jerseys and hats on backward could be considered ahead of their time. Afterall, the Mariners had some of the coolest guys in the league like Ken Griffy Jr., Randy Johnson, and Edger Martinez.

Twenty years later, the Seattle based organization thought it would be a good idea to turn ahead the clock again to 2027. This time, the Mariners recreated the same uniforms and even got a Delorian to make an appearance.  The Kansas City Royals even got in on the action with golden cleats and special jerseys. Dee Gordan and Nelson Cruz took it a step further by backward hats and huge gold chains in the spirit of the event.

While the 1998 team had some of the greatest players of their generation, they failed to meet expectations. The past 20 years for Seattle have been two decades to forget. In 2001 the Mariners won a record 116 games but were eliminated in the division series to the Yankees. It is all downhill from there. Since that season, the Mariners have not made the playoffs and were trying their best to turn ahead the clock and make the playoffs.

2018 has been good for the sea dogs, being 22 games over .500 at the end of June.  Seattle has an 86.1% chance of breaking their drought according to FanGraphs.com. Equally important, is the fact that they are now undefeated in the year 2027. The team may consider going untucked and sleeveless for the rest of the season.

With the victory over the Royals, the Mariners have won six in a row and are knocking on the Astros door for first place. It has been 16 years since they have had this kind of success. It will be interesting what moves this team will make at the deadline to compete with Houston.
