Arkansas Baseball blows chance at National Championship

Arkansas blows Championship game after misplaying a foul pop up in the 9th inning.

The Arkansas Razorbacks have been to nine different College World Series. The Razorbacks have been the runner-ups once but have never won the Championship in their long history. On Wednesday night, with 2 outs in the 9th inning they were one out away clinching their first title. Up 3-2 on the Oregon State Beavers, Cadyn Grenier was at the plate with the tying run standing on third base. Grenier fell behind in the count 1-2 when he fouled a pitch to the right side.

This was the moment the University of Arkansas has been waiting for 98 years. The easy pop up was playable for three Arkansas defenders and it appears as though the first baseball had settled under it. Despite the easy play, it appears that there is confusion as the ball makes its way down from the Omaha night sky.

The Second basemen bumps the first basemen and forces him to lose the ball. As a result, the ball falls in and the hitter is still alive. Two pitches later, Grenier singles past the shortstop to tie the game at 3. The misery for Arkansas does not end there. The next batter is Trevor Larnach, who leads the Beavers in home runs. Larnach gets ahead in the count 2-0 and finally gets a pitch he can drive.

The next pitch is a fastball right down the middle and Trevor Larnach does not miss it. He drives it deep to the right field corner and the ball just makes it over the 335′ sign and to the left of the foul poll. That gives Oregon State the 5-3 lead and it would stay that way. The best of 3 series is tied at one with a winner take all at 5:30PM central time first pitch on Thursday.
