Jacob deGrom tallies 1,000th K in dominant 3-0 win
Jacob deGrom leaves it all on the field, get 1,000th strick out and all but solidifies his CY Young Award.
Jacob deGrom has been the only bright spot for the New York Mets this season. If we are being totally honest, the Mets do not deserve his talents. deGrom has the lowest run support in the major leagues by a long shot. This means that when he is on the mound, the Met bats are asleep. Looking at his numbers on the season, it is clear that deGrom is having one of the best seasons of all time. Baseball has been around for a long time. Anything associated with “All Time” should be taken very seriously. However, the major media still thinks he has something to prove. Coming into Wednesday’s game, Jacob deGrom’s record stood at 9-9. No Cy Young winner has had less than 13 wins in their award-winning season.
Some fun stats relating to deGrom’s season are exciting and also eye-opening to casual fans. Yes, he only has now ten wins, but there is a lot more than wins for pitchers these days. His ERA is 1.70 in 217 innings. That is .75 better than anyone else. That feat is unheard of in baseball. That is almost a full run per game over the course of the season. deGrom is also sporting a not so modest 269 strikeouts and an ERA+ of 219. For those of you who have no idea what ERA+ is, I’ll try to explain. It compares every pitcher’s ERA and calculates what the “league average” is. Once that is determined it is baselined at 100. Therefore, an ERA+ of 100 is average. Not bad but not good either. At 219, deGrom leads the National League by 50 points.
Jacob deGrom has literally been almost 25% better overall than any other pitcher in the NL. This video is about his 1,000 career strikeout and that is an incredible feat in its self. Especially at his age. deGrom is the CY Young, even if the voters lay an egg, the Mets need something positive this year!
