Kike Hernandez says Dodgers overcoming 3-1 deficit against Braves was ‘special’
Kike Hernandez will have something to remember as the Dodgers overcame the odds against the Braves.
In a dramatic Game 7 of the NL Championship Series at Globe Life Field, the Dodgers prevailed over the Braves 4-3. With Los Angeles down 3-2 in the sixth inning, Kike Hernandez launched the tying home run into left field to even the score 3-3.
Then with two outs in the seventh, and a seven-pitch battle; Cody Bellinger blasted a solo shot into right field off right-hander Chris Martin to give the Dodgers the lead. Julio Urias was lights out on the mound, as he threw three perfect innings against Atlanta to close out the series and seal the victory.
“This is what you dream as a little kid,” said Hernandez. “You don’t just dream of being a big leaguer. You always dream about game 7 of the World Series. This is not the World Series, but it’s Game 7. You always dream about 3-2 (count), bases loaded; and this and that. It’s Game 7 and you try to do whatever you can to help the team win. And I was able to do that tonight.”
The Dodgers will make their third World Series appearance since 2017, and seek their first championship title since 1988. It may have been a tough obstacle to overcome, but Hernandez assures the team has always maintained their eyes on the prize.
Even as Los Angeles trailed Atlanta 3-1 through four games in the NLCS, and on the verge of elimination.
“We took care of business during the regular season,” said Hernandez. “We took care of business against the Brewers, we took care of business against the Padres; we took care of business against the Braves. It was a little harder than we thought it was gonna be, but I’m glad we pulled it off. Being down 3-1, and coming back to win in seven games; this is something that I’ll never forget. And it’s special for sure.”
