Speaker saves game as Rays top Yankees in extra innings.

The last thing on the Yankees mind during Sunday’s game was speaker placement at Tropicana Field. After the game, speakers wear the cause of an unhappy flight to Philadelphia. With the score tied in the top of the 9th inning with one out when a substitution was made. Clint Fraizer came into the game as a pinch hitter and a chance to take the lead for the Yankees.

Consequently, Frazier came into the game with no home runs and limited at bats in 2018. Tropicana Field would make sure his home run total stayed at 0. On a one and one pitch, Frazier got a hanging slider low and away. He went with the pitch and sent it HIGH and deep to left field toward the foul pole.

The thing is, the ball never made it out of the infield. On its way out, the ball collided with what looks like a speaker hanging from a catwalk above the outfield. However, the ground rules at Tropicana Field indicate that any ball that hits a catwalk in fair territory is considered in play. Therefore, after the ball struck the speaker, the shortstop was able to catch to pop up for an out.

Baseball is quickly moving forward with new technological and that includes Statcast. Statcast helps with measuring home runs by calculating launch angle and velocity off the bat. According to Statcast, the batted ball was projected to be a home run by about 20 feet which would have given the Yankees a late lead. Regardless of whether you think it should have been a home run or not, the ruling on the field stood and the Yankees lost the game in extra innings.
