Rodney Anderson speaks on fellow teammate Kyler Murray
Running back Rodney Anderson speaks on fellow teammate Kyler Murray potentially signing to MLB team.
During Big 12 media day, Rodney Anderson gave his thoughts on Oklahoma Sooner quarterback Kyler Murray being drafted No.9 in the MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Anderson said even though this could be Murray’s last year with the Big 12 champions, he knows that Murray will still give it his all.
“The thing about Kyler is, even though he may have a one-and-done year, he’s the type of player he will lay it all down on the line for you,” the running back said.
The situation that Murray finds himself in is rare because there are not to many college football players that have to choose between two sports at such a high level; in recent memory, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson can relate. Anderson said the situation is “kind of strange.”
The draftee was a transfer from Texas A&M football program and was about to become former Oklahoma quarterback and now Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield’s successor. The Sooners will have to find a new starting quarterback after the 2018 football season because, according to Murray’s agent, Murray will be playing baseball after this upcoming season.
If Murray does play baseball after this season, the ninth pick is assigned a value of $4,761,500. Head coach Lincoln Riley said that it is up Murray and he supports his decision.
“My hope through this whole thing is that Kyler is gonna be able to do what he wants to do,” Riley said. “If he wants to go play baseball after this year, then we’ll wish him well and be happy for him. But the ball’s gonna be in his court, which is where it should be.”
