Bob Arum says Tyson Fury will be ‘Massive’ in the U.S.
Bob Arum sees the potential in Tyson Fury to become an icon, both inside and outside of boxing.
Top Rank founder and CEO Bob Arum reached an agreement to co-promote Tyson Fury earlier in February. As part of the multi-year deal which was reportedly worth over $100 million, Fury will have his fights streamed in the U.S. through Top Rank’s broadcast partner; ESPN.
Arum’s goal is to establish a fan base for Fury in the U.S., the same as the fan base that he has across of the Atlantic in the United Kingdom. Apart from being a top heavyweight, Arum notes Fury’s charisma as the force behind his popularity.
“Because of his (Fury) personality, we will make him into the biggest attraction in the sport of boxing,” said Arum. “He reminds me a lot of the comeback George Foreman. Where George Foreman’s personality and humor made him an icon in the United States, and led to tremendous numbers when he fought.”
Fury, (27-0-1, 19KOs), of Manchester, England, fought to a draw against WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (40-0-1, 39KOs) last December. He survived two knockdowns from “The Bronze Bomber,” even when he appeared to be out cold in the twelfth round; but managed to get back on his feet.
Although an immediate rematch was ordered by the WBC sanctioning body, Arum had other plans upon his deal with Fury. Arum aims to promote Fury into a bigger star, with the hope of getting big numbers when he meets Wilder.
“We, I believe; will do a great job in promoting Tyson Fury,” said Arum. “So when they fight, we would anticipate two million or more homes will buy the pay-per-view. And that’s the ball game.”
“The Gyspsy King” will make his return to the ring when he meets Tom Schwarz (24-0, 16KOs) at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on June 15.
