Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is all smiles after his team’s historic win over Louisville, 77-16, on Saturday. His offense put up the most points in program history since 1981. His team is clicking on all cylinders at the right time, as the playoff race heats up. And Clemson is in control of their own destiny for a possible second championship in three years. Swinney is especially happy about the way his team dominated against Louisville, overall.

Against the Cardinals, Swinney’s offense put up a total of 661 yards behind a strong rushing attack. Three running backs on the roster – Travis Etienne (153 yards), Lyn-J Dixon (116) and Tavien Feaster (101) – picked up over 100 yards on the ground each. Nearly 500 of Clemson’s yards came from running the ball. In fact, the running backs led to another Clemson record – 13.3 yards per rush.

While the rushing attack carried the day, the passing did their part as well. Starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for two touchdowns on 59 passing yards, but it was backup freshman Chase Brice that stole the show in the passing game. Despite only seven pass attempts, Brice threw for 110 yards and three touchdowns. While most teams throughout the nation have trouble finding a good starting quarterback, Clemson has shown three quarterbacks good enough to start.

However, Louisville still managed to put up more passing yards on the day. Louisville had two signal callers throw for more than 100 yards apiece – Jawon Pass (110 yards) and Malik Cunningham (121). Most of it had to with Louisville playing catch up the whole game, but it’s still an area of concern if the defense gave up 231 passing yards to a 2-7 team.

Overall, though, Clemson’s defense held the Cardinals to under their season average of 21 points scored per game. They also forced three turnovers, with a pick-6 coming from Isaiah Simmons early in the second quarter. Not to mention, Clemson’s defense completely shut down the Cardinal rushing attack. Louisville was only held to 81 rushing yards on 36 attempts for a staggering 2.3 rushing average.

Next week, Swinney and his team will face their hardest test remaining on their schedule in Boston College. The 17th ranked Eagles are in second place in the ACC at 7-2 overall (4-1 in the conference). Clemson’s championship hopes will need to run through a tough Boston College team this Saturday. But with how Clemson has been playing recently, they’re more than ready. In the last four weeks, Clemson has put up 240 points (a school record). Freshman quarterback Lawrence will need to play his best on the biggest stage.
