Isaiah Simmons on his first career pick-6 and Clemson’s defense
Clemson’s redshirt sophomore Isaiah Simmons continued to build on his impressive season, as he returned his first pick-6 of his career against Louisville. His first career score also happened to be the first interception of his career. Simmons’ 27-yard score early in the second quarter was one of Clemson’s 11 touchdowns of the game.
Simmons’ first pick-6 that put the Tigers on top 28-3 was on his mind the entire season. He wanted to redeem himself for a potential pick-6 he dropped his freshman season.
“Since I dropped my first one last year, I knew I had to make up this one. When this time came I just thought I was due for one,” Simmons said. “They’re really big on their No. 2 running a quick out and they hit him a lot, so I was anticipating it. I thought the wide receiver was going to catch it, but I took advantage of my opportunity.”
Simmons has shown improvement not only by snatching his first interception but all over the stat sheet this season. This year, Simmons has already surpassed his freshman year totals in every category, and there are still three more games to go in the Clemson season. For instance, Simmons has recorded 49 total tackles this year – four more than last season – and he has upped his sacks from three to 4.5.
Simmons’ interception was one of the three turnovers Clemson forced in their rout of the Cardinals, 77-16. However, it was Louisville that still managed to pick up more passing yards than Clemson, 231-169. Next week against No. 17 Boston College, the defense will need to sharpen their defense if they hope to contain Anthony Brown – the Eagles’ quarterback that has passed for 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns (2nd most in the ACC).
