Last season, Old Dominion went up to Blacksburg, Virginia to play Virginia Tech and lost 0-38. This year was a little different.

Old Dominion shocked the nation by upsetting No. 13 Virginia Tech 49-35. This was Old Dominion’s first win against a Power Five conference since joining the FBS. Their season wasn’t looking too good as they were already 0-3, but things could change for them now.

Old Dominion’s quarterback Blake LaRussa threw for 495 yards and four touchdowns. The Monarch’s had 137 rushing yards, 130 of them coming from Jeremy Cox. Cox was able to secure the win for the team. When things were getting close, they gave him the ball and the Hokies just couldn’t stop him. Cox had two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the first to put them in the lead and then another one with 1:37 left to play to put them two touchdowns ahead and lock down the upset.

The fourth quarter had more action than the rest of the game and may have been the longest 15 minutes of play for Virginia Tech fans. Virginia Tech went into the fourth quarter up 28-21. Right away, LaRussa showed off his arm. LaRussa threw an impressive 25 yard pass to Travis Fulgham for a touchdown to tie the game. Three minutes after that, Cox ran for 15 yards through several defenders to put the Monarch’s up by seven with a little under 10 minutes to play. Virginia Tech wasn’t going out that easy though. Ryan Willis threw to Chris Cunningham to tie the game back up. LaRussa responded to that and showed off his arm once again. LaRussa threw a 29 yard pass to Jonathan Duhart who had a remarkable catch to tie the game once again. Virginia Tech had the chance to come back, but a crucial mistake by Damon Hazelton kept the Hokies behind with not much time left. Old Dominion had the ball again and they let Cox do his thing. Cox ran the ball 40 yards breaking several tackles to put the Monarchs up by 14 and win the game.

This was one of the biggest upsets in college football we have seen in a while. Virginia Tech is looking to recover and get back on track next weekend when they face Duke, who will be a tough opponent.
