Urban Meyer Under Fire for Handling of Zach Smith Allegations
Urban Meyer was recently placed on paid administrative leave from Ohio State after the university found out he allegedly knew about the allegations of domestic abuse from former assistant coach Zach Smith.
There were allegations in 2009 and 2015 against Smith abusing his now ex-wife. Many want to know if Urban Meyer knew about those allegations. According to Zach Smith, after Meyer found out about the allegations in 2009, Meyer told him “let due process run its course.” At the 2018 Big 10 media day, Meyer stated that he didn’t know anything about the incident in 2015, how Smith allegedly strangled his wife. But, almost a week after that, Meyer came out and said how he did know about it and followed the proper protocol, but never said what that protocol was.
Courtney Smith, ex-wife of Zach Smith, has opened up to the media about the abuse. Text messages between Zach Smith and Courtney have come out where Smith admits to strangling his wife in 2015. Zach Smith denies ever hitting his wife or any other domestic abuse allegations.
If Meyer knew about the allegations, why did he take the risk of keeping Smith on his staff? That risk could end his career now.
While none of us outside The Ohio State University will know the full, true story, these allegations are very real and it will be interesting to see how Ohio State deals with Urban Meyer.
