Trevor Williams gave up three long balls in a tough start on the mound.

Taking the hill on three days rest and tossing over two innings of relief prior, Trevor Williams wasn’t at his best as the Mets fell 7-3 to the Rangers at Citi Field. In 2.1 scoreless innings against the Astros previously, Williams gave up only one hit, with four strikeouts.

It wasn’t the same momentum this time around, after the right-hander gave up five earned runs, on six hits, including three home runs in 3.2 innings. However, Mets skipper Buck Showalter knew there was only so much in the tank for the versatile Williams.

“Trevor gave us what he could give us,” said Showalter. “Only working on three days (of rest), where he had to pitch some innings out of the bullpen. Got behind there, but we kind of held it in check with the relief pitchers. We just had some trouble keeping the ball in the ballpark.”

The Mets were on a roll in the first, where Starling Marte smacked a two-run homer to center and gave New York the 2-0 lead. Eduardo Escobar hit a solo shot in the fourth, his second home run in as many games; to give the Mets their third run of the game.

That was all they could get against Rangers’ lefty Martin Perez, who tossed 6.2 innings, while allowing three earned runs, on seven hits, with four strikeouts.

Texas had their own dingers in store, as Cole Kalhoun answered with a three-run shot to right in the second. Jonah Heim continued the onslaught by hitting a solo home run. But Calhoun, who had a big day at the plate; wasn’t finished. In the fourth, he followed with a solo homer to left; and went 3-5 with four RBI’s on the day.

Showalter made the call to the pen after 59 pitches from Williams, 39 for strikes; with New York down 5-3 in the top of the fourth.

“I don’t wanna say gassed,” said Showalter, on Williams’ rough start. “He (Williams) just, tank was a little low. Less than full as that game went on.”

New York’s bullpen was tagged with two more runs, including a solo home run from Leody Taveras off Tommy Hunter.
