Lionel Messi Missed Penalty Kick vs. Iceland
Lionel Messi sees his very average penalty kick attempt stopped by Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Por Hallordsson in Argentina’s opening game of the 2018 World Cup against Iceland.
In the 64th minute of the game the score was tied at one-a-piece for bot Iceland and Argentina, who had both scored within the first 20 minutes of the game, Argentina was awarded a penalty kick. Lionel Messi was taken down in the box in what was a fairly clear infraction and was given the opportunity to put his nation ahead in this match. With the world watching and endless discussions about who’s better, Ronaldo or Messi swirling around every living room, bar, cafe, stadium, etc. in the world, Messi steps up and hits a very routine shot towards the middle-left of the net. The shot was met with both hands of Icelandic keeper, Hallordsson as he punched it away and forced a massive rebound.
Nothing came from the rebound, nor in the following minutes after that for Argentina. Messi and the Argentines pushed and pushed and pushed but Iceland did not break. The game finished in a 1-1 draw and Iceland was able to steal a point in first ever World Cup game in history. Iceland proved that just because they are not a team filled with superstars and household names they can still hang and fight with the best of them.
Both Argentina and Iceland still have matches against Croatia and Nigeria to look forward too. However, it’ll be interesting to see who gets out of this group as there are four teams that certainly have what it takes to advance in this tournament.
