In recent years, the Atlantic Coast Conference teams have made a run for the top spots in the nation. Clemson has been the most dominant team, being a national championship contender or champion in the past few years. Trevor Matich breaks down some of the top ACC teams this season.

Clemson has been a powerhouse in recent years, making the College Football Playoffs the past three years and winning the National Championship in the 2016-2017 season. Clemson will be the team to beat in the ACC yet again. Clemson has one of the best defenses in the nation, if not the best. You can’t forget about their offense though. Clemson’s offense is often overshadowed by their defense. Their offensive line this year will be the strongest it has been in a while. With Trevor Laurence now there to compete with Kelly Bryant at quarterback, the Tiger offense will be strong in all positions.

Miami made a run at Clemson for top team in the ACC last year and will try to do so again this year. The strongest part about Miami’s team is their starting linebackers. The best starting trio in the country will make teams pay for their mistakes. They like to hit and aren’t afraid to create some destruction on the field. This aggressive defense will hold teams back from scoring.

Florida State is another team that has been dominant in the past few years. Last season was their worst record since 2009, but with new head coach Willie Taggart, things are looking up for the Seminoles. The main key for Florida State is the offensive line giving their quarterbacks time. Florida State has two competitive quarterbacks, Deondre Francois and James Blackman. Francois suffered a knee injury in the season opener against Alabama last year, but will be ready to compete this year. If that offensive line can give either of these quarterback’s time, Florida State could make a run for one of the top spots.

The ACC has shown to be one of the toughest conferences in college football. Especially with these teams competing for the top spot, this season will be an exciting one.
