CFL quarterback Johnny Manziel has been traded from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Johnny Manziel has been traded from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the Montreal Alouettes both teams announced Sunday. Not only will Manziel be leaving, but also offensive lineman Tony Washington and Landon Rice as they were part of the trade.
The Alouettes will receive defensive end Jamaal Westernman, wide receiver Chris Williams and first-round draft picks in the for 2020 and 2021. The former Heisman Trophy winner spent most of his time behind incumbent quarterback Jeremiah Masoli when he was with the Tiger-Cats, but with this trade he will see more playing time and possibly a starting role in the future.
Manziel will be joining his former head coach at Texas A&M, Mike Sherman, when he was a redshirt in 2011. Sherman is happy with the move because of the timing and how it something different for the Alouettes’ football team.
“This is a move both (Alouettes GM) Kavis Reed and I felt we needed to make at this time,” Sherman said. “Neither one of us believes in the status quo and felt we needed to shake things up. Johnny is someone we believe can elevate one of the most important positions on our team.”
