Texas upsets Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry Game
Despite the last minute comeback from No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 19 Texas holds out with a last second field goal to upset the Sooners and bring the Golden Hat back to Austin.
Oklahoma’s biggest weakness in the game was their defense. OU gave up over 500 yards to a team that averages in the 300s per game. The Sooners gave up two critical 3rd and long plays that both resulted in Texas scoring touchdowns later in each drive. OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was just released from the team following this game. If OU could have made the big plays when it mattered, the game would have ended very differently.
Kyler Murray had quite the game, accounting for five touchdowns and throwing for 304 yards. He wasn’t in his best form though. He gave up an interception in the first quarter and a fumble in the 2nd when OU needed to score to get back into the game. Even though he made some mistakes, his talent is too hard to stop for the entire game. Murray had 92 rushing yards, including a 67 yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring OU within one touchdown of Texas. Murray really showed off his speed and athleticism there, proving he has what it takes to be a top quarterback.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger had quite the game as well. His confidence and calm persona helped him lead his team to victory. Ehlinger threw for 314 yards, ran for 72 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in the game. His consistency was key with a QBR of 83.6. Keeping this dominant presence on the UT offense will be key for Texas for the rest of the season.
Even with the impressive performance from Ehlinger, the real MVP of the game was true freshman kicker Cameron Dicker who made the 40-yard field goal to win the game. OU was down 21-45 starting the fourth quarter, and came back to tie the game 45-45 with 2:38 to play. Texas was able to move down the field to set up a field goal with 0:09 to play. Dicker had a perfect kick to seal the win.
Does this mean Texas is back? They are pretty close to being back, but we won’t be able to say for sure until the end of the season.
