Kyle Schwaber Powers Phillies to a Critical Win at Field of Dreams

The eyes of the baseball world were on Dyersville, Iowa, on Thursday night as Major League Baseball returned to the Field of Dreams for the first time in four years with a matchup between the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins.

It was the third MLB game played at the site, following the Chicago White Sox-New York Yankees matchup in 2021 and the Chicago Cubs-Cincinnati Reds game in 2022. The league once again paid homage to the 1989 classic film, with both teams entering from the cornfield and baseball legends following after a brief introduction from Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber.

“These guys all laid the groundwork for us before we even thought about playing baseball or while we were growing up,” Schwarber said postgame. “… It was just a really cool opportunity for us, and it was like the icing on top to be able to say those words before the game and see them come out of the corn.”

Schwarber then put on a show of his own, launching the third pitch of the game into the corn for a solo home run. He added another later in the game, increasing his league-leading season total to 37 as Philadelphia cruised to a 7-1 victory.

“Obviously, you want to check that off if you have the opportunity to play a game here,” Schwarber said. “You want positive results, but to do it here, yes, it was really cool. … Overall, just an unbelievable experience.”

Schwarber was the catalyst, but Philadelphia’s offense received contributions throughout the lineup. Eight Phillies collected at least one hit, while Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh, Bryson Stott, and trade-deadline acquisition Luis Arraez helped provide the offense needed to secure the win.

“It’s huge, and I think to have a season, a lot of guys have to have good years, but the aircraft carriers have still got to carry your, and they’ve got to have big years,” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly explained. “… I think that’s the key. Any team that ends up having a really good season, a lot of guys are having good years, and that’s what we’re going to need down the stretch.”

The victory moved Philadelphia into the final NL Wild Card spot entering the weekend, making the Field of Dreams win more than just a memorable night.

“We know what’s at stake,” Schwarber added. “We know the writing on the wall. We know that, for where we need to go, we need to step up in a lot of different ways and a lot of different areas. I feel like our team is ready for that. We know the road ahead that we’re going to have, and we know that everyone’s going to be pulling that same rope every single day and trying to find ways to execute and win ball games. It doesn’t have to be one area every single day, but I feel like all the different areas are going to come together at a really good time.”
