Kyle Higashioka talks Confidence in Gerrit Cole & Previews Yankees vs. Red Sox AL Wild Card Game
Higashioka on Gerrit Cole: “On the field, he can elevate his game when it’s a big situation”
New York Yankees backup catcher Kyle Higashioka will get the nod to start in their AL Wild Card matchup against the Boston Red Sox. When asked about his preparation for one of the biggest games in his career, Higashioka says it’s all the same.
“No,” says Higashioka on any changes in preparing for the start. “In the regular season, I treat every game as a must-win. Here, every game really is a must-win.”
Higashioka will start in place of Gary Sanchez due to the connection he has with starting pitcher Gerrit Cole. Higashioka has been behind home plate for more than 160 of the 180 innings Cole has pitched, and he’s confident in the ace.
“Everybody believes he is going to step up and bring his best game. He’s preparing mentally right now as we speak. I’m preparing. The whole team is preparing. It takes everyone.”
