Michael Young reflects on MLB Career, Derek Jeter, Dirk Nowitzki, Ron Washington & Rangers (Full Jersey Retirement Press Conference)
Watch as Rangers legend Michael Young sat down to answer questions at the Rangers press conference.
Young spoke on former manager Ron Washington, who coached the Rangers from 2007 to 2014.
“He missed the ballgame to be here, that dude is baseball smoke. He lives it, breathes it, drinks it, and he sacrificed a lot to be here. Those 3 hours that Washington gets during a game means a lot to him. For him to put that a side for a night and come here to show some support, It really sent this night over the edge for me.”
In addition, Young was asked on what important skills the game of baseball taught him through his career.
“Coping skills – you get used to getting your butt whipped in this game, and you have to answer that. I think i cope a little better when things don’t go my way because I’m used to it. I’ve learned to cope, and I’ve taken that with other parts of my life”, he finished.
Young also spoke on his relationship with the Rangers since being traded to now being Jon Daniels assistant.
“It’s a rare thing – there aren’t many guys out there that have had a run with a team like I have. From being a player here for 13 years, and then going up and working for the GM and a role that I think is valuable. Everyday I’m up there I learn from a lot of people from the front office. It’s a really fun place to be, and they’ve all made me a better baseball mind.”
Young was also asked about the 2010 strikeout against Alex Rodriguez to clinch their first ever World Series birth.
“That was a ride – we took our franchise to a place we’ve never been before. That whole night was fun. It was a pretty special feeling when you have a bunch of guys in the clubhouse knowing 100 percent you’re going punch your ticket to the World Series.”
Young spoke on Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki and their relationship playing in Dallas.
“Dirk and I have gone way back. Our careers here have intertwined. We both played for the same team for a long time, but he makes my 13 years here look like a pit stop. It means a lot, we’ve hung out a lot and we’ll probably hang out more that he has that retiree card like me”, he finished.
