Kyrie Irving says he plans to stay in Boston next year
So much has been made about Kyrie Irving’s free agency decision next summer.
Rumors of Irving’s desire to leave Boston for New York seemed to gain traction until Irving put that to rest (for now, at least). in front of Celtics fans at the TD Garden, Irving reassured Boston he’s there to stay.
“If you guys will have me back, I plan on resigning here,” Irving told Boston.
This is the second time Irving has downplayed the rumors of him the New York. Earlier this offseason, Irving said he saw why experts and fans started predicting the rumors of him to the Knicks. He’s from New Jersey, and there’s been a trend of star players wanting to go back home such as LeBron James to Cleveland.
“It’s easy to follow. I’m from New Jersey. But it’s rumors, rumors, rumors. … It’s easy to draw that connection – New York City – but why would I want to leave here,” Irving said.
Irving could very well be telling the truth, but many fans don’t give him the benefit of the doubt since he said he wouldn’t leave the Cavaliers. Until he did before last season.
However, Irving knows Boston was one game away from reaching the NBA Finals last year despite major injuries and they have arguably the best bench and coach in the league.
