Deontay Wilder speaks with Fanatics View on Errol Spence as a champion, and his thoughts on Spence vs. Garcia.

Deontay Wilder praises IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (25-0, 21KOs) on his ambition as a world champion. Wilder, who holds the WBC heavyweight belt; knows the hunger that thrives in a champion from first hand experience. It is one that he sees and shares with Spence.

“Errol Spence is a true champion,” said Wilder. “His mindset is of a warrior, of a champion. He know what he is, he know what he stand for, what he represents. I see a lot of me in him, you know I mean. Being the champion and having that champion mentality. Long as he keep that, nobody never beat him.”

Spence retained his belt over Mikey Garcia (39-1, 30KOs) by unanimous decision in his fourth title defense. His craft and size proved to be too much for Gacria, who jumped up two weight classes from lightweight for the challenge. Wilder respects Garcia for making the jump in weight to challenge one of the best welterweights in Spence.

“You gotta give him (Garcia) mad respect, no losers here,” said Wilder. “Both of them winners. Because Mikey Garcia’s coming up two weight classes and fighting the best. He didn’t come up and just fought anybody in the weight class, just to test this s–t out. He went and fought the best.”
