Errol Spence and Mikey Garcia speak on what they expect from each other when they step into the ring on March 16.

IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (24-0, 21KOs), and four-division champion Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30KOs); will meet in a highly anticipated match at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Mar. 16. The pair of undefeated champions have their eyes on legacy as they meet for Spence’s 147 pound title.

“I’m happy that I took on that challenge,” said Spence. “I’m looking for a skillful (Mikey) Garcia. He’s got good talent, a lot of great experience. With me, you know, I have that pedigree. Even if I don’t have the experience, I have the pedigree to overcome anything that he brings to the table come March 16th.”

Garcia is moving up in weight to challenge Spence for his title, and aims to become a champion in five divisions. In a bold and risky move, Garcia is going straight after one of the top three welterweights in Spence; rather than work his way though the division.

“I’m in search of greatness, you know,” said Garcia. “Not many fighters get an opportunity to do what I’m doing. You know, fighting another undefeated champion in their prime. You know, that’s the kind of fight that excites me, that’s the kind of fight that motivates me. That’s the type of fight that I need to bring out the best out of me. And that’s why we decided and chose to go after Errol Spnece.”

Spence is a natural welterweight, having fought in the division his entire professional career. Garcia has fought outside of lightweight just once, when he defeated Sergey Lipinets for the IBF and vacant junior welterweight titles last March. Spence is a higher level opponent, however, and holds a size advantage over Garcia.

“Everything is done well,” said Garcia, of Spence’s fundamentals inside the ring. “So I gotta respect him, I gotta respect his skills. I gotta respect his power and size, cause that’s probably the only advantage that he does hold over me; the size. But other than that, I think I’m a better fighter in every other way. Just by a little bit, but I’m a little bit better.”

The championship bout will not be an easy task for either fighter. Garcia has won titles in multiple divisions and defeated a fair share of champions, but none really of the same level of skill as Spence. Garcia’s move to challenge Spence in his weight class can be criticized, or viewed as him daring to become great.

On paper, Garcia is also one of the most accomplished fighters that Spence would step into the ring with. But both champions possess high fundamentals, with technique, footwork, combinations, and intelligence.

“He’s fundamentally sound, his ability to think in the ring,” said Spence, of Garcia’s fighting style. “A lot of fighters are not capable, especially under pressure or under the stress, to think in the ring and have the ability to think and overcome different things; and switch gears. That’s what made Floyd Mayweather so great, he was able to adapt. The most thing I respect about him (Garcia), is his willingness to become great.”
