Errol Spence says he would have preferred to get in the ring with Shawn Porter, but Porter had other plans.

IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence decided to take matters into his own hands by throwing jabs at Shawn Porter, who holds the WBC welterweight title. Spence (24-0, 21KOs) has been calling out for fights against the top welterweights, including Porter (29-2-1, 17KOs).

“Money wise, legacy wise, you know, I’m the fight to happen,” said Spence. “Shawn’s cool, but I mean Shawn’s not selling out anything. I mean he fought in California, (and) there was nobody there.”

Spence was referring to Porter’s recent title defense against mandatory challenger Yordenis Ugas at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Porter retained the title by split decision in a close fight. Two of the judges scored the fight 116-112 and 115-113 in favor of Porter, while the third judge had it at 117-111 for Ugas.

“If Shawn wanted to fight, this Mikey Garcia fight probably wouldn’t have happened,” said Spence. “But he (Porter) got busy, you know, trying to take the easy way out.”
