Gennady Golovkin speaks on signing a new fight deal with DAZN.

Former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has agreed to a six-fight, three-year deal with streaming service platform DAZN. As part of his new deal, Golovkin will fight twice a year for the next three years. The first of his six fights under DAZN will be in June, though an opponent still has yet to be named.

“I thought DAZN gave the best platform, the best opportunities to extend my own ideas,” said Golovkin. “And I also think that DAZN will be the best home for all boxers in the future.”

DAZN will give Golovkin, 36, of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, the opportunity to promote two fight cards in 2020 and 2021 under his stable; GGG Promotions. By acquiring Golovkin (38-1-1, 34KOs), there is potential for a trilogy match with lineal middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (51-1-2, 35KOs).

“We’re not gonna be able to bring the fans the best fights without Gennady Golovkin,” said DAZN executive chairman John Skipper. “So he was a key element of our plan to be what he just said we’re going to be, which is the premiere destination for fight fans. So there’s very little question in my mind that this is a signing that we needed to make.”

Last October, DAZN signed Alvarez to a five-year, 11-fight deal for $365 million. Alvarez will take on IBF middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (35-2, 29KOs) in a unification bout on May 4th. Shall Alvarez defeat Jacobs, he could meet Golovkin later in the Fall.

Golovkin first faced Alvarez in September 2017, which ended in a debatable draw. Then in September 2018, Alavarez dethroned Golovkin of the WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles by majority decision. Prior to the defeat, Golovkin was tied with Bernard Hopkins for the most consecutive middleweight title defenses at 20.
