Manny Robles emotional after Andy Ruiz’s victory over Anthony Joshua
Manny Robles and Andy Ruiz achieved the unthinkable against a seemingly invincible Anthony Joshua.
Manny Robles was filled with emotion following Andy Ruiz’s stunning TKO victory over unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Although his fighter entered as a heavy underdog against Joshua, the outcome wasn’t a surprise to Robles.
“He (Ruiz) listened to me, and followed instructions that were the key,” said Robles. “But this goes back to the gym. It’s the chemistry, it’s him being able to listen to me. You win your fights in the gym really. And this is just the cherry on top.”
Ruiz (33-1, 22KOs) showed heart and brought the fight to Joshua (22-1, 21KOs), an element that is common in fighters of Ruiz’s Mexican heritage. After Ruiz was floored in the third round, he was able to brush it off and rally with four knockdowns of his own.
“Joshua had never faced a fighter like Ruiz,” said Robles. “I said this all along. He had never met a Mexican fighter, but in the heavyweight division. That can go in there, and bang the body the way he did. And take a punch, and show resilience. I mean, it’s incredible.”
