Mikey Garcia speaks on going the distance against Errol Spence, and a potential fight with Vasyl Lomachenko.

Mikey Garcia came up short in his bid to capture a title in five divisions against Errol Spence. Though he took the unanimous decision loss, Garcia showed heart by withstanding Spence’s onslaught and going the full twelve rounds.

His brother and trainer, Robert Garcia, had thought about throwing in the towel. But (Mikey) Garcia insisted that he can keep going, and felt that he could turn the fight around.

“It’s boxing, I got hit with a couple of shots; that’s the way it is,” said Garcia. “But I said ‘no, no, no, let me continue, let me fight through. I can still pull it off.’ I felt like I probably still could. I felt like I could have one punch and maybe turn it around. Unfortunately, it didn’t go that way.”

Garcia (39-1, 30 KOs) jumped up two weight classes from lightweight for the challenge against Spence (25-0, 21KOs), though it’s not certain he’d go back down to the division for his next fight. One intriguing opponent for him at lightweight would be unified title holder and top pound-for-pound fighter, Vasyl Lomachenko (10-1, 8KOs).

Lomachenko is a three-division champion, having captured titles at featherweight, junior lightweight, and lightweight. The bout would give Garcia another shot at claiming pound-for-pound legitimacy.

“Maybe I stay at 47 (welterweight), Maybe I come down to 35 (lightweight),” said Garcia. “But at 35, that is the most interesting fight with Lomachenko. And I would love to take on that fight.”
