Robert Garcia speaks on historical fights involving weight changes, and looks to accomplish the same feat.

Robert Garcia has guided his younger brother Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30KOs) to world titles in four divisions. Garcia eyes another title in five divisions for Mikey when they meet IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (24-0, 21KOs). The challenge will not be an easy one, but Garcia recalls other fighters who’ve accomplished it in classic fights.

“It was a very difficult fight, at that time Hagler was the best 160-pounder,” said Garcia, of Sugar Ray Leonard moving up in weight to challenge then lineal middleweight champion Marvin Hagler. “And Leonard moved up two divisions to challenge Hagler. I think it was a great fight, very hard for Hagler. So that’s the fight that I want to study and see, because I know it’s going to be that hard.”

Mikey and Spence are ranked #5 and #7, respectively, by The Ring magazine’s pound-for-pound rankings. Garcia hopes that Mikey can overcome the challenge and pull off the victory, just as Leonard did against Hagler, and Shane Mosley when he also jumped up two weight classes to challenge Oscar De La Hoya.

The 2012 Trainer of the Year feels that they are preparing well in training camp, and says that taking on bigger men is something that Mikey has done regularly.

“We know he’s (Spence) going to be the bigger, stronger guy,” said Garcia. “But we’re already doing that in the gym with bigger, stronger guys too. So it’s not going to surprise us. We know Spence is going to be the bigger, the stronger guy. But it’s not going to surprise us because we’re already doing it in the gym.”
