Jalen Hurts speaks at Alabama Media Day
As starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide, Jalen Hurts has gone 26-2 with his only losses being the in 2017 championship against Clemson and the 2018 Iron Bowl. He could potentially have another loss in this past year’s national championship against Georgia if it wasn’t for Tua Tagovailoa.
Hurts has been a solid quarterback for the Tide, as it shows from only having two losses as a starter. He is a reliable pass thrower, and can run the ball very well. Hurts has shown he has what it takes to be a great quarterback. But, as he started not doing so well towards the end of last season, and especially his performance in the national championship, many people think Nick Saban is going to make a change at starting quarterback this season.
At Alabama’s media day, Hurts finally spoke his mind to the media. This was his first time talking to the media since the national championship. As Hurts said, many of the Alabama staff did not want him speaking to anyone about this upcoming season or anything else going on. Lots of rumors were going around about Hurts potentially transferring and such, but as he made it clear at the media day, those were all rumors and he has never said anything about transferring, especially since he hasn’t spoken to anyone all spring and summer.
Hurts also made it clear that he has not been happy about how the Alabama staff has handled this quarterback competition. Hurts said “no one came up to me the whole spring, coaches included, no one asked me how I felt.” Hurts also spoke about how it’s too late for the coaching staff to try and fix things now because “the narrative has already been set.” Hurts feels his coaches weren’t bold enough to ask him how things were going, and it’s too late now.
It’s clear that Jalen Hurts doesn’t feel he is being respected by members of this team. Many people think Hurts is handling this situation with such dignity, finally speaking his mind but still being respectful to the team he plays for. Others think this couldn’t be good for him. Knowing Nick Saban, any bad talk about him is never good for anyone. Will saying these things to the media hurt Jalen’s case for starting quarterback. Normally you wouldn’t think so, but at Alabama, anything is possible.
