Mike Elko Highlights Marcel Reed’s Growth, Leadership Entering 2026 Season

Marcel Reed has gained experience navigating the responsibilities that come with being Texas A&M’s starting quarterback. After taking on that role over the past two seasons, Reed has continued to develop as a player and leader while guiding the Aggies’ offense.

That progression is something head coach Mike Elko has seen throughout Reed’s time in College Station. Speaking at SEC Media Days, Elko discussed how Reed has handled the expectations surrounding the position while maintaining the same approach that helped him earn the role.

“There’s a stature that comes with that in the Bryan-College Station area,” Elko said. “And I think he’s remained very humble. I think he’s given an awful lot back to the Bryan-College Station community. I think he still conducts himself in the same way that he always has.”

Reed was also selected as one of Texas A&M’s representatives at SEC Media Days, becoming the first Aggies quarterback to attend the event since 2019. Elko said Reed earned the opportunity through the leadership role he has taken within the program.

“I think obviously he’s established himself not only as our quarterback, but as the leader of our program,” Elko said. “He received more votes for captain this year than anybody else on our roster.”

The 2026 season will also bring a transition on offense following the departure of former offensive coordinator Collin Klein. Texas A&M added Josh Lynch as its quarterbacks coach, giving Reed and the quarterback room a coach focused specifically on their development.

Elko said Lynch’s role allows him to spend more time working with Reed without the additional responsibilities that come with coordinating an entire offense.

“The ability to kind of just spend the entire day, Coach Lynch, focusing on Marcel’s development and what he can do today to take the step forward,” Elko said. “I think has been a unique transition that’s been very helpful for Marcel.”

As Texas A&M prepares for the 2026 season, Reed enters the year with experience leading the Aggies’ offense and a new structure designed to continue his development at the quarterback position.
