UMBC’s Jairus Lyles shoots the lights out in historic upset of Virginia
UMBC, few if any recognized the name of the small-town America East Conference school heading into the night. If they had trouble figuring out what those four letters stood for, they probably had no chance identifying the Retrievers’ star guard Jairus Lyles on the court.
Last night was probably the last time someone will ever have to ask how in the world UMBC made the NCAA tournament and who the heck is Jairus Lyles.
Lyles dropped 28 points on a mind-bending 9-11 shooting from the field. He powered his squad to an improbable victory over the top-seeded Virginia Cavaliers, all while checking in and out of the game with excruciatingly painful cramps.
Watch as Jairus Lyles etches his name in College Basketball history with a legendary performance against the championship favorite Cavaliers.
