Vince Velasquez Clobbered by comebacker Gets Out with None Pitching Arm
Vince Velasquez gets pitching arm beaned by a comebacker but manages to get out at first.
Vince Velasquez did not plan on revealing his talents as an ambidextrous player on Saturday. Velasquez kept his dual arm skills a secret up until Saturdays start against the Washington Nationals. Most of us can struggle to throw a ball with their strong arm let alone both. There has been one other recent case of a pitcher using both arms in the majors. Pat Venditte has been using both arms to pitch since 2015 with so-so results.
However, Vince Velasquez only uses one to pitch, but on Saturday, he got to show his double arm skill. As much as he probably wanted the world to know of his abilities, this is perhaps not the way he wanted to prove it.
With two outs and a runner on third in the second inning, Adam Eaton comes to the plate. With two strikes, Eaton lines a hanging curveball up the middle off the pitcher. Velasquez recovers and picks up the ball and throws the speedy runner out at first to end the inning.
If you go back and take a closer look at the video, you will see some details that may surprise you. As Vince pitches the ball, he is obviously using his right arm to throw. After Eaton hits the ball, it ricochets off of the pitcher’s right elbow. As Velasquez runs after the ball, we can see he throws his glove off of his left hand. Losing his glove could be just the consequence of getting hit with the ball at over 100 MPH. Instead, he uses his left hand to throw out the runner at first base.
Vince Velasquez made what could be the play of the year for a pitcher, but he sure did pay the price. Velasquez is likely headed for the DL after the game after having a breakout first half of the season.
