Heisman hopeful Tua Tagovailoa and the rest of the No. 1 Crimson Tide look to play the likely No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game in an effort to secure their playoff spot.

It’s possible we will see a stat line similar to that of last year’s National Championship game, when Alabama beat Georgia 26-23 in an overtime thriller.

If currently undefeated Alabama were to lose to Georgia, it isn’t likely they’ll take a playoff spot, though they tend to be the committee’s darling team of the SEC (and when looking at their body of work, rightfully so). Logically, a loss in the SEC championship game would disqualify them from playoff contention, especially if Oklahoma can pull off a win over conference rival Texas in the Big 12 championship game or Ohio State wins the Big 10.

Despite looking at it this way, Alabama remains a powerhouse that rolls over almost everyone they play. If they were to lose a close game, it’s safe to say the committee may still grace them with the No. 4 spot.

If Georgia were to lose to Alabama, however, their fate is obvious – try again next year.

Georgia’s only loss on the season came to a No. 13 LSU, 36-16, a game that was largely considered an upset. Since then, they’ve been flawless, recording a five-game win streak since their loss. While the strength of schedule is up for debate, Georgia have won each game convincingly.

The same can be said for Alabama, however. Despite a few first halves with close scores (such as a 17-14 halftime score against Auburn and a 10-10 halftime score against The Citadel), Saban’s halftime adjustments prove to be effective, keeping Alabama’s perfect season rolling.

It’s likely we will see Georgia removed from playoff contention. Alabama is currently on a four-game win streak against Georgia that started in 2008. However, expect to see Georgia put up a fight.
