Errol Spence used Mikey Garcia’s confidence as fuel
Errol Spence was motivated by the things he heard coming from Mikey Garcia, and took it to the ring.
It seems that Errol Spence had an additional motivator during training camp besides his championship belt, and hometown crowd; Mikey Garcia’s confidence. Garcia had stated that he believed his fundamentals were better than Spence’s. He even told Spence that he’ll be “just another opponent.”
“It didn’t concern me at all, it just put a chip on my shoulder,” said Spence. “If he (Garcia) wasn’t so arrogant, he probably might have caught me off guard a little bit.”
Garcia looked to display the same set of skills that he had against past opponents, but on this particular night they weren’t there. Instead, Spence showcased his own skills in a dominant one-sided performance to retain his title by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight for Spence, with two scoring it at 120-108; and the third judge at 120-107.
“He made me really lock-in in training camp, and you know, do what I did,” said Spence. “Basically out-class him.”
