Oregon State’s College World Series 9th Inning Comeback
Game 2 of the College World Series was a must win for Oregon State. A win for the Beavers would force a deciding Game 3, but a loss would end their season and make Arkansas National Champions. The Beavers didn’t want to go home so soon though. Thanks to a 2-out rally in the top of the 9th inning, the Beavers won Game 2 and forced a Game 3.
Oregon State was down 2-3 starting the 9th inning. With the tying run on third and 2 outs, the game would have been over if it wasn’t for a crucial mistake made by Arkansas’s defense. Oregon State’s shortstop Cadyn Grenier hit a pop-up in foul territory behind first base. Arkansas’s first baseman, second baseman and right fielder all ran for the ball, but none were able to make the catch. A pop-up that was catchable for any of those players was dropped in the middle of all of them due to miscommunication between the players. Even though the game would have been over with a catch right there, the Razorbacks still had hope since they were still one strike away from winning the College World Series. Cadyn Grenier wasn’t going to let that happen though. He was able to keep the next ball in play and hit an RBI single to tie the game as 3-3. The best was still yet to come for the Beavers. Next, Trevor Larnach stepped up to the plate and hit the go-ahead 2-run homerun that caused the Beavers to win the game. After being 1 strike away from winning the College World Series, Arkansas was now down 2 runs going into the bottom of the 9th. The Razorbacks were not able to score any runs in the 9th, resulting in the Beavers taking Game 2 thanks to their 9th inning comeback.
With the College World Series Title on the line, Game 3 between Arkansas and Oregon State will be on Thursday June 28 at 5:30 CT.
