Watch as “Polar Bear” Pete Alonso speaks to media following second straight derby win.

Reigning home-run derby champion Pete Alonso didn’t skip a beat at the 2021 Home Run Derby in Colorado. The Mets slugger ran away with the trophy, hitting 74 bombs to win for the second time in a row.

“[Dave] Jauss was just putting them right in the bread basket”, says Alonso, crediting his derby pitcher.

“I feel like my timing was consistent, my tempo was great, and my effort level was outstanding. I was able to stay consistent, and really kind of dominate”, he finished.

Alonso also spoke on Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini’s incredible story after beating cancer and taking him on in the final round.

“For him to put on a show the way he did, it was really special. I’m super happy for him and his family that he’s back playing ball, doing the things he loves. His story is just absolutely remarkable. A hell of a bounce back, he’s just a high-character guy with ultra talent. He for sure made me work in that last round.”

“They did an excellent job on it”, Alonso admired his derby champion necklace. “This is gorgeous, and yeah it’s heavy.”

In addition, Alonso talked about his power and Derby being a dream come true.

“I’m a power hitter, and for me I think I’m the best power hitter on the planet. Being able to showcase that, and really put on a fun display for fans, I think that it’s truly a dream come true for me. When I was younger my parents actually let me stay up past my bedtime and watch this”.
