LeBron James responds to racist graffiti with powerful statements
In a Wednesday press conference from Oakland, LeBron James addressed the media on what it means to be black in America ahead of the NBA finals beginning on Thursday, June 1.
In case you missed it, a racial slur was spray-painted on the front gate of LeBron James’ West L.A. home early Wednesday morning. James has been a vocal opponent of racism throughout his career, most recently speaking out regarding the slurs hurled at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones in early May at Fenway Park.
During this press conference, James took a moment to speak about race relations in his home country.
“No matter how much money you have, no matter how famous you are, no matter how many people admire you, being black in America is tough. We got a long way to go, you know for us as a society and for us as African-Americans, until we feel equal in America. My family is safe, and that’s what’s important.”
James continues to use his stardom and athletic prowess as a stepping stone to address racial inequality in the United States. Race relations and sports has been forefront in the average viewer’s minds ever since now free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem, so props to James for speaking his mind and not spoon-feeding rehearsed drivel to the media. We hope this graffiti isn’t the work of some deranged Warriors fan, as everyone and their grandma knows how well LeBron James plays when he’s angry.
