Cody Covington on Kamaru Usman Rematch, McGregor/Poirier II & Dana White (Exclusive)
Watch as Fanatics View’s James Lynch interviews Colby Covington following UFC 261.
At UFC 261, Covington watched as Kamaru Usman got a beautiful 2nd round KO over Jorge Masvidal in the anticipated rematch.
“I wasn’t surprised”, Covington said on the KO. “I knew it was a possibility. Jorge keeping his hands low, trying to defend takedowns, scared of the takedown threat. He got caught with a big bomb and that’s how it goes.”
Covington expressed his interest in a rematch with Usman following his 5 round KO loss back in December of 2019.
“They’re trying to pivot and find an easier fight in the division”, he told Lynch. “There needs to be a rematch. The fans want it, Dana [White] wants it. The only person that doesn’t want it is [Kamaru] Marty.”
Covington also gave thanks to UFC president Dana White and shared growing relationship with Dana as a UFC fighter.
“Me and Dana, we got a better relationship these days, respect what he’s doing. I want to say thank-you to Dana White. Last night he brought some normalcy back to America and back to arenas. Putting 15,000 screaming fans, energetic, on their feet back to the arena.”
In addition, Lynch asked Covington his thoughts on the Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards fight happening on May 15th.
“He’s just looking for a cash grab, he’s done, he’s washed up too. He’s gonna get one more cash grab and we’re never gonna hear of Nate Diaz again”, he finished.
Finally, Covington fired shots at Conor McGregor, forecasting 3rd fight against Poirier happening in July.
“Con-man McGregor is washed up, he’s cashed out”, Covington told Lynch. “He’s not hungry like he was before. He’s not that broke kid that came up in the streets of Ireland and fighting for food and fighting for this.”
