Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the only player in NFL history to throw for 10 touchdown passes in the first two games of an NFL season. He passed Peyton Manning and Drew Brees as the new record-holder.

Of all the great quarterbacks to ever come across the NFL, from the Joe Montana’s to the Tom Brady’s of the world, none have ever got off to a hotter start than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. No one had ever thrown for 10 touchdown passes in the first two games of an NFL season.

Until the first-year starter, Mahomes did against two American Football Conference (AFC) powerhouses, the Los Angeles Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Last season, Mahomes showed flashes of what he’s capable of in his lone start against the Denver Broncos. Filling in for starter Alex Smith at the time, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 27-24 victory in icy conditions. In the win, he threw for 232 yards on 22 completions and drove the Chiefs down the field for the game-winning field goal.

Now as the full-time starter, Mahomes has already taken the NFL by storm. Facing the Chargers in week one, Mahomes threw for 256 yards and four scores in the Chiefs’ 38-28 victory. Two of Mahomes touchdown passes came from a 58-yard connection with Tyreke Hill and a 36-yard bomb to Anthony Sherman. However, Mahomes wasn’t done just yet. Against the Steelers, Mahomes showed his first game was far from a fluke.

In Pittsburgh, Mahomes flattened the crowd with three first-quarter touchdown passes, making the score 21-0. But despite any comeback attempts the Steelers had in mind, Mahomes made sure to put those thoughts to rest. In total, Mahomes tore up the Steelers defense for 326 passing yards and six touchdown tosses to five different receivers.

At 2-0, the Chiefs are only one of the nine remaining undefeated teams. Along with leading the league in passing touchdowns and committing zero turnovers so far, the Texas Tech product also leads in quarterback rating (143.3). The scariest part of Mahomes’ strong start is he’s just getting started. Mahomes barely celebrated his 23rd birthday on Sept. 17.
