Bryce Harper takes ground balls at first base in the midst of his disappointing season.

At the start of the season, Bryce Harper was rumored to be the first 500 million dollar player in the history of sports. During April, Harper proved that he would be worth every penny by leading the NL in homers. After his hot opening month, Harper has really fallen off the wagon. While he is slugging and getting on base at above average paces, he is struggling with strikeouts.

At the midpoint of the season, Bryce is on pace for almost 200 strikeouts and is currently batting just .216. By the end of this season, he may not end up with the colossal paycheck after all. If you are reading this, then you probably know that Bryce Harper plays right field for the Washington Nationals. First base is not an odd transition for ballplayers as they progress in their careers. Being just 25 years old, it is strange for him to take reps at a new position.

He has had a history of leg and lower body injuries in the past few seasons. His struggles at the plate and on defense may grant him some time at a more relaxed position like first base. It does bring up the debate for the designated hitter for the National League. Players in the National League do not have the luxury of taking “half days off” by only having to hit during a game. For a player like Bryce, who is struggling on both sides of the ball, DHing could turn his season around.

For now, it seems he will stay in the outfield for the Nationals. However, don’t be surprised to see the superstar make some starts at first base. Bryce has said recently he wants to be apart of the Home Run Derby in Washington this summer, but he has to make the All-Star team first!
