First, we have to congratulate the Oakland Athletics for what that team continues to do in baseball. Over the last 20 seasons, the Oakland A’s have been just as good as anyone in the American Leauge. While never raising the World Series trophy in November, the A’s have exceeded expectations time and time again. With another improbable 97 win season, the A’s looked to finally take the leap and beat the Yankees in the playoffs.

The 2018 New York Yankees have been one of the best teams the Bombers have had in years. However, this particular team is the first to not exceed the MLB luxury tax. This means that they finally broke tradition and didn’t spend more than any other team to win. Looking at you Red Sox. Anyway, while this was a different approach for the Yankees, the result is more of the same. Another day another 100 win season. This time the Yanks relied on the long-ball. Breaking the record for most in a season beating the ’97 Seattle Mariners with 267.

The Yankees and the A’s could not be more different in the history of baseball and in 2018. While the Yankees spent less money than usual, their bullpen was worth just about as much as the A’s entire team. Coming into Wednesday’s game, the Yankees were, of course, the heavy favorites. With superstars like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Andrew McCutchen, (that is only naming a few) and the A’s with almost no one a casual fan could name. It lined up to be a real David vs Goliath in New York. However, in this story, Goliath wins easily. Aaron Judge rockets a 2-run home run off the A’s “Opener” in the first inning and don’t look back.

Luis Severino spun a masterful 4+ innings and the monstrous bullpen shut down the A’s. With the final score of 7-2 the Bronx Bombers move on to face the Boston Red Sox. This will be the two bitter rivals first matchup since the infamous 2004 ALCS. Maybe we get a sequel to the movie Fever Pitch… a man can dream.
