Mikey Garcia on moving up in weight for title challenge: ‘It’s been done before.’
Mikey Garcia speaks on moving up in weight to challenge Errol Spence, and why this fight is good for boxing.
Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30KOs) envisions greatness when he steps into the ring against Errol Spence (24-0, 21KOs) for the IBF welterweight title. The sky’s the limit for the undefeated pound-for-pound champions, as they meet at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Mar. 16.
“I’m a world champion in four divisions, undefeated, pound-for-pound one of the best;” said Garcia. “He’s (Spence) undefeated, pound-for-pound one of the best; in his prime. That’s what makes this fight such a great fight, and we’re excited we can offer that. I’m happy that we can actually do this type of fight for the fans. That’s what boxing needs, that’s what the boxing world has been asking for.”
Garcia heads into the fight as an underdog, moving up in weight to challenge the bigger Spence at welterweight. He has fought just once outside of lightweight, but looks to follow the path of other champions to have accomplished the feat. Some of which include Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins, and Canelo Alvarez.
“It’s been done, where the smaller man moves up in weight; and beats the bigger man,” said Garcia. “It’s happened, not often; but it does happen. And the ones that accomplish it are remembered. The ones that accomplish that, you know, become one of the greats. The ones who do that get into Hall of Fame.”
Although Garcia will challenge Spence in his natural weight class, he believes in his own skill; and isn’t concerned about the size advantage.
“I feel I have everything needed to beat Spence,” said Garcia. “I feel that I’m a little bit better in everything that he does. The only thing that he has going for him honestly, is the size, the weight; naturally he’s bigger. But other than that, I think I’m a little bit better in every other aspect.”
