Trae Young gives his thoughts on loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

Even with Atlanta Hawks rookie point guard Trae Young playing sensational lately, the Hawks fell to power forward LaMarcus Aldrige and the Spurs.

While this was a close game in the box score, it was evident the Spurs did a number on Young. He shot 8 of 24 from the floor and 1 of 7 from beyond the arch for a total of 33 percent from the field. The first round pick said his shot was not falling, but also added San Antonio played excellent defense.

“They played tremendous defense and had a good game plan, but some of it is on me,” said Young.

This was the rookies first time playing against the San Antonio Spurs all season, so coming into the game he had really no clue on what to expect from a Gregg Popovich, the Spurs long-time head coach, coached defense.

“It’s not usual, I guess,” the former Sooner said. “You don’t see teams this late into the season for the first time. So that was the first time we saw the Spurs this year. So the next time I will know a little bit more of how they are going to be guarding me and how I can attack their defense.”

The rookie point guard acknowledged that this process is all part of being a rookie. There are going to be growing pains in the NBA. It is good to see his mind is in a the right place and he knows what to expect.

Learning that nugget of truth could be credited to former Hawks point guard and current Toronto Raptor point guard Jeremy Lin. Lin played 51 games with Atlanta this season before his buyout happened and he was picked up by the Raptors. Young said the knowledge he was able to acquire while Lin was a Hawk “ultimately” helped play at such an outstanding level so early into his career.
