Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson talks differences between quarterbacks Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins.

Chris Thompson has worked his way into the top of the Redskins running back rotation. Being with Washington for the last five seasons, Thompson has seen the former Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins and newly added quarterback Alex Smith both play.

Thompson said one of the obvious difference is that Smith is able to extend plays, which allows for more variety when it comes to choosing plays.

“I think the one thing that separates those two is that Alex– his ability just to extend plays,” Thompson said when talking about the difference between Smith and Cousins. “Alex can run, as you all know. He’s a pretty good athlete, so there is things that we have been able to implement that we really weren’t able to do with Kirk.”

Thompson is true in his statement. While Washington’s quarterback is seen as more of a duel-threat quarterback than Cousins, the Vikings’ quarterback is seen more of a pocket passer. Do not be surprised to see some read-option plays with Smith at the helm. Smith is also a more experienced quarterback in comparison to Cousins.

The one negative for Smith is that he is known for his conservative play; he changed some minds this last season when he began to take more risks down the field with the Kansas City Chiefs. Even though he modified his playing style, Smith was still traded to the to Washington.

Cousins was not resigned by Washington and was signed to the Minnesota Vikings on a three-year, $84 million deal that is fully guaranteed.

Was it a mistake for Washington to let Cousins go? Was Smith the right pick up for Washington? After this season is over, then we will know the answer.
