Oklahoma Avoids Upset, Beats Army in OT
Oklahoma was a 28-point favorite heading into their game against Army.
How did the game get so close? Army couldn’t handle the Sooner offense, but were able to keep them off the field by holding on to the ball for most of the game, even though they weren’t able to score from each possession. Army’s time of possession was 44:14, while OU’s was only 15:19. Four of Army’s possessions were 16 plays or more. The key was to run the ball. Army’s quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. only completed 3/8 passes for 40 yards. The Knights ran for 339 yards though, 102 of those yards from Hopkins.
A back and forth game had most of the action in the first half. OU had the ball first and scored on their first three possessions, while Army scored on their first two. The score was 21-14 with 2:45 left in the second, and remained that way at halftime. One standout touchdown was an impressive catch by OU receiver CeeDee Lamb, who displayed his talent and ability to get open. We also saw more of Kyler Murray’s talent. Murray showed off his explosive speed when he easily ran the ball right past Army’s defense for 33 yards for a touchdown.
Oklahoma finally had a chance to end the game when Kenneth Murray intercepted Hopkins pass with 2:23 left in the game. The Sooners set up a field goal right as time would expire, but Austin Seibert missed the 33 yarder to send the game into overtime.
OU had the ball first in OT, and Murray found Lamb in the end zone again to put the Sooners ahead. On Army’s possession, OU’s Parnell Motley was able intercept the ball to stop the Knights and avoid the upset.
If Army won the game, it would have been their first win over a top 10 team in 50 years. OU and Kyler Murray wasn’t going to let that happen though. Murray is receiving more Heisman hype after this game, and will continue to dominant in the Big 12. OU faces Baylor next, with their long rival Texas, who will present more of a challenge then originally thought, in two weeks.
