Colorado Rockies Upend Astros on Wacky Play in Seventh Inning
The Colorado Rockies tie game on a one of a kind sacrifice fly in foul ground.
The Colorado Rockies 2018 season has been a roller coaster from the opening pitch of the season. After last season’s surprise playoff berth, the Rockies are looking to repeat their October push. During the long season of baseball, it takes a couple of lucky breaks to secure late-game comebacks. In this case, however, it was a lucky fall.
With one out and in the seventh inning and runners in scoring position, the Rockies sent their MVP candidate to the plate. Nolan Arenado has been a staple for the Colorado squad for several years and one of the most clutch players in the National League. He is just the guy you want batting in these late-inning situations.
Down 0-2 in the count, Nolan fights off a good change-up into foul ground. J.D. Davis, the Houston Astros back up third basemen breaks on the ball that looks out of play. To the dismay of the home crowd, the ball drops over the Astros dugout and Davis is able to leap into the dugout and make the play. Probably the last thing on the third baseman’s mind was a runner tagging from third base to score the tying run! Thankfully Davis’ good buddy Evan Gattis was there to flip the upended infielder. Gattis then screams at Davis to throw the ball home to get the runner at the plate. Understandably, the throw is way off and the runner is able to tie the game.
It is heads-up plays like this that carry a team back into the playoff hunt during long summer days. The Astros won a game similar to this a while back. Sometimes it is better to be more lucky than good. The Rockies ended up winning the game on a Charlie Blackmon walk-off home run to seal the victory for the Rox.
