Derrick Lewis had no answers for Daniel Cormier’s wrestling game as Cormier easily defends his heavyweight title.

It took Daniel Cormier (22-1) just two rounds to retain his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis (21-6) in the main event of UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden. Cormier’s wrestling proved to be the difference in the fight as Cormier was able to control and dominate Lewis on the ground.

Cormier landed his first takedown in just under a minute of the first round. He landed a few small right elbows to the head of Lewis as he held him down on the ground for nearly two minutes. Lewis was able to get back to his feet, but was taken down for the second time with two minutes left in the round. Cormier got Lewis’ attention with a few left hands to the head. With 35 seconds to go, he followed up by landing several right hands as he controlled Lewis from the back.

In the second round, Lewis looked to bring it to Cormier as he threw a combination with bad intentions. Cormier was able to avoid the danger by slipping and sliding the punches. Lewis kept looking for the right hand as he threw it several more times, but never got it going as Cormier continued to lean away from it.

Cormier took the fight back to the ground as he landed his third takedown. Lewis managed to get back up,  but was taken back down with about three minutes left to go in the round. This spelled the beginning of the end for Lewis. After landing a few hard right hands from the back of Lewis, Cormier went for the rear naked choke. Lewis tapped and the contest was called to a stop at two minutes, 14 seconds of round two.

Next up, Cormier will look to defend his title against Brock Lesnar in March. It will likely be the last fight of his professional career, as he will turn 40 that same month and plans to retire.
