Eddie Alvarez Explains Conor McGregor Setback: “$100 Million Dollars, Is The Opposite of Fighting”
Watch as Eddie Alvarez speaks on Dustin Poirier knockout and McGregor’s future in the UFC.
According to Alvarez, McGregor’s lack of adversity cost him the fight.
“I was surprised”, Alvarez said. “When you have a $100 million in the bank, it’s the opposite of fighting. FIghting is like having to deal with adversity everyday, being told no. Having to wake up and like do things that you don’t necessarily want to do. And that requires discipline, and hardens you and you become a good fighter as a biproduct of all these things that happen throughout your life.”
In addition, Alvarez eluded to McGregor’s earnings making the champion soft in the ring.
“The idea of having $100 million in the back, where everyone tells you yes, you get to make you’re own schedule. You get to wake up when you want, go to bed when you want, it’s the opposite of having to be a fighter. It actually softens you.”
“I feel like for Conor to come back, he needs to harden himself as a man. In order to do that, he needs to get rid of all them things, maybe go away. Get out of that world, and become hardened again over that time.”
Finishing the interview, Alvarez expressed his content refraiming from coaching.
“I don’t know, I couldn’t say”, Alvarez said on training McGregor. “If there was a heavy dollar amount involved, maybe. I just personally like being in someone’s camp and helping them when I’m getting ready for a fight or being in a camp. I enjoy that, but no – I don’t like taking a role of having the obligation of someone else’s win or loss depend on me. It’s the same as a fight for me, and sometimes if I’m not fighting I don’t want to feel that way anymore.”
