Donovan Mitchell on Trae Young’s comments about Luka comparisons: “I can imagine. I think you want to be your own person”

Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young and Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic will forever be linked throughout history. In the 2018 NBA draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected Luka Doncic with the No. 3 pick, while the Mavs selected Young with the No. 5 pick. The teams agreed to swap draft rights for each player with Atlanta also receiving a first-round pick in 2019.

Since then, the comparison of the two has not been a secret, to the point where Young has become bothered by it. In a recent interview with ESPN’s Royce Young, Young stated: “For me, it bothers me. I just love playing basketball, I know he does. So it bothers me because it’s annoying just getting asked about it all the time. But I know it comes with it. I didn’t ask for it to happen, but it happened. It’s two totally different situations, two totally different players. He’s playing well, I’m playing well. Just let it be.”

With both players in their second year in the league, Doncic is averaging 29 points per game with nine rebounds and nine assists, while Young is totaling 28 points, eight assists, and four rebounds per contest.

Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell spoke with reporters after the team’s 111-106 victory over the Hawks and shared his opinion on the matter.

“I can imagine. I think you want to be your own person,” Mitchell began. “I think he’s a guy who’s different than Luka. Luka is great in his own right but Trae is unique. Obviously, they (Hawks) haven’t had a winning season, but he’s a guy who puts the work in. He has guys around him that want to work. This team wants to work. And they’ll be good. Look at tonight, the attitude they came out with. He’s that leader.”
