Stephen A. Smith sounds off on the Alex Smith trade
Tuesday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Washington Redskins made a blockbuster deal that sent quarterback Alex Smith to Washington in exchange for a third-round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.
With incumbent starting quarterback Kirk Cousins having been franchised tagged by the Redskins the last few seasons as a way to rent a quarterback while avoiding handing out a big contract, it appears as if Washington is ready to move on from Cousins and into a new era. Further evidence of this move’s implications were made clear when the Redskins reportedly offered Smith a four-year 70-million-dollar extension immediately after acquiring him.
As for Cousins, even if the Redskins were to offer him a smaller contract to stick around as the backup, he’ll likely look for a new home elsewhere in the NFL. Cousins was 24-23-1 as a starter in the nation’s capital, but if surrounded with viable weapons on offense, his 81-36 touchdown to interception ratio suggests he could be much better.
Fans, coaches and players alike are still figuring out what to make of this early offseason surprise. Watch as Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman of ESPN’s First Take discuss the impact of the trade.
